The Grus is an experimental/downtempo band formed by Shura Zhuravleva and Simon Gendor in a remote Russian village with the population of 30 people.
It seems rather hard to pinpoint the sound of the band due to a large number of influences it incorporates, like early gospel/blues singers, the 70's west Berlin music, modern trip-hop and experimental electronic music. The Grus creates their unique palette of sounds using analog synths, old-fashioned guitars from the Soviet era, tape recorders and an array of handmade instruments and microphones, as well as the singing of birds living nearby the studio. At first, this music might seem a little bleak, but with every listen it unfolds beautifully, full of inner light, layered rhythmic structures and soft melodies.
Their first album, ‘Nest’, released on Follyphone, Golden Ass Distro, and Ricco Label in 2016, received critical acclaim.
