Tokyo Ambient Collective : Different Silences (to be released on 5th September, 2026)
Two Different Silences, Recorded in Japan and Italy.
Tokyo Ambient Collective, a non-fixed member ambient music project formed by artists based in Tokyo, has completed its sixth album, 'Different Silences'.
For this recording session, founding members, Takahiro Kido, a composer and member of Anoice, and Kenji Azuma, an instrumentalist who plays a variety of unusual instruments from around the world, were joined by Yuki Murata, a composer and pianist and also a member of Anoice, and Alessandro Ambrosi, an Italian composer and accordionist, both of whom have appeared on previous Tokyo Ambient Collective albums. Also, for the first time, they were also joined by Ayako Kanisare, a performer of the shō, a traditional Japanese instrument.
The five odd-numbered tracks on 'Different Silences' were recorded at the Ricco Label studio in Tokyo. The sessions center around a Yamaha CP-70 electric piano, manufactured in 1976 and played by Yuki Murata, alongside analog synthesizers played by Takahiro Kido and Kenji Azuma. The recording sessions took place with the windows left open on a particularly windy day, allowing the sound of trees swaying in the wind to become part of the recordings.
The remaining four even-numbered tracks were recorded at Alessandro Ambrosi’s studio in Treviso, Italy, featuring sessions with his accordion, Ayako Kanisare’s shō, and Yuki Murata’s melodica. Back in Tokyo, Yuki Murata added piano, while Takahiro Kido and Kenji Azuma contributed synthesizers, percussion, sounds generated from environmental recordings, and noise created from electromagnetic waves present in their surroundings, bringing a sense of unity to the album as a whole.
